in the distant future, humans have spread throughout the galaxy. although no one has learned how to travel faster than the speed of light, physisits have discovered a method by which stable wormholes may be opened, allowing rapid travel throughout the galaxy.
there is, of course, a catch: there is only one substance that can be used to power the “ribbon drives” that open the rifts in space-time. this rare substance, known as “dry,” is only abundant on the planet Klin, a tidally-locked world of which one burning half is always facing its sun while the other frozen half is trapped in an eternal winter’s night. only the central strip of the world, known as “the ring,” is comfortably habitable. the ring is populated by the rich and powerful industrialists of Klin, while the impoverished dry miners are relegated to the searing heat or bone-chilling cold of the planet’s outskirts.
not all miners are satisfied with their lives of constant discomfort, brutally hard labor and constant state of poverty while the rich at Klin’s center reap the benefits of their labor by selling dry to other worlds at exorbitant prices. rumors of rebellion are growing, and few can predict what will happen in Klin’s future.
the story begins as Issac, a young recent college graduate from the planet Dulvern, arrives on Klin as part of a trading mission. when things things don’t go according to plan, Issac begins an adventure that will change his life, carry him to the edges of the galaxy, and alter the fate of worlds.
